Jose Atilio Hernandez
Founder & Managing Principal

Jose Atilio Hernandez has worked for the past fifteen years developing and implementing policy solutions at the state and local levels.  Currently, Mr. Hernandez serves as Principal for IDEATE California- an issue specific policy management and public relations firm. In this capacity, he works with decision-makers in business, non-profit and government sectors to advance policy solutions in the fields of Energy, Education, Workforce Development, Telecommunications, and Health. Prior to IDEATE, Mr. Hernandez was the Director of External Affairs and Community Relations for ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career. At ConnectEd, Mr. Hernandez developed and managed policy at the state, local and Federal levels, including drafting legislation, resolutions, and providing technical support to decision-makers. In addition, Mr. Hernandez recruited and managed a state-wide Coalition of diverse stakeholders to support education reform.

Prior to ConnectEd, Mr. Hernandez worked for six years in the California State Senate as the Director of Policy and Development for the 20th Senate District. As staff, Mr. Hernandez also served as the Principal Consultant to the Senate Select Committee on College and University Admissions and Outreach, a Consultant to the Joint Committee to Develop a Master Plan to End Poverty in California, and oversaw the Senate Education Committee, the Senate Utilities and Commerce Committee, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, and the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.  Mr. Hernandez began his policy work as a Senior Policy Analyst for Latino Issues Forum, a public policy and advocacy institute in San Francisco.  

Mr. Hernandez is the Chair of Brightline Defense Project, a sustainable communities organization in San Francisco www.brightlinedefense.org, Chair of the Salvadoran Leadership and Educational Fund Board, www.salef.org  and a Chair of the California Public Utilities Commission’s Low Income Oversight Board www.liob.org.  

Mr. Hernandez received his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley.  He lives in Burbank, California with his wife and three children- Santiago, Ceumara and Amateo.
